Galen Gruman on the failure of mobile products from RIM, Microsoft, and Nokia:
RIM particularly played up its cozy relationship with security- and control-minded CIOs who would never let such toys into the enterprise. Nokia and Microsoft had the same paternalistic, insular point of view. (Dell’s story is more like that of the OEMs—I’ll get to that shortly.)
They were talking to the wrong people. CIOs and IT managers are generally conservative, risk-averse, and traditionalist—especially at large companies and even moreso at regulated ones. In their worldview, change is bad, and so is user freedom. These Neanderthal IT leaders are a lagging indicator of what’s really going on. They dismissed the PC, the Internet, and e-commerce, too. But betting on them—and the large checks they kept writing—let RIM, Nokia, and Microsoft blindly traipse into irrelevance.

In all respect, I used and still think IT managers ot be 95 years old who think computer is the devil which then must be controlled at any cost, which is (in my opinion) greater than the loss of productivity or “secret”.
People with bad intention will always succed in finding a way, however the larger majority (us) get the penalty for them.
In essence, I mainly agree with the article.

Great read Gary. Thanks, I totally agree with the writer. Mobile companies are still trying to catch up to the iPhone made back in 2007. Apple is 4 years ahead of the game.
I think your totally forgetting about android. Sure the other os platforms are behind ( although windows phone is catching up) but alot of people prefer android to the communism that is apple. Sure you can jail break itbut there are alot of tech stupid people out there. Android is taking over. They are way ahead of the game.
I don’t think RIM will even fail unless Corporation start to use Iphone or Android phone. If you are one of those that use the phone straight for email and texting, I would prefer RIM over Iphone since is really easy to make mistake on touch screen keyboard.
